IFPMA · From Journey to Ecosystem

The Challenge: The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) needed to explain, in an accessible way, how a medicine or vaccine is developed and who is involved at each stage. The project was developed with The Health Policy Partnership, a consultancy that provided the content along with an initial creative concept: the journey.

During the review process, successive rounds of revisions suggested a hesitation that the written feedback did not fully explain. The design worked on paper, but something was not quite aligned.
A meeting with the client revealed what was missing: they saw the process as an ecosystem — something more organic, in which multiple stakeholders operate simultaneously and influence one another. It was not a question of visual style, but a different way of understanding the process itself.

The Solution: Following the meeting, I proposed a new approach. I developed an ecosystem diagram that was repeated across the five stages of medicine and vaccine development: 1. Discovery, 2. Preclinical Development, 3. Clinical Development, 4. Regulatory Review and 5. Integration into Care.
At each stage, I identified the stakeholders involved and clarified their respective roles and actions.
The content retained its depth and complexity, but became much clearer and quicker to navigate visually.

The Outcome: We created a dynamic visual explainer that allows readers to quickly understand each stakeholder's role and follow the development process with ease.
The client was pleased with the result, which ultimately proved stronger than the original concept because it brought together the perspectives of everyone involved.
